Murder Mysteries can add some mystery to you reception

When it comes to wedding receptions, the classics—food, dancing, speeches—are great. But what if you want to add a little something unexpected? Something you?

Here are six ideas for your reception that are a little bit different, but can add something unique to your big day.

1. Wedding Quiz

Let’s start with something fun and personal: a quiz all about you!

Split your guests into teams and ask questions like:

  • “Where did the couple first meet?”

  • “Who made the first move?”

  • “What’s their shared guilty pleasure?”

You can work traditional quiz questions into it for those guests who want to flex their smarts.

You can place it anywhere you want, before the meal or after, or split it into rounds through the night. Add some fun prizes and let your MC bring it to life.

2. Murder Mystery Reception

Yes—your reception can double as a thrilling whodunnit! Murder Mysteries are very popular in Australia, and can be run as immersive, character-based events, or as a teams-based party game

Think Cluedo-meets-cocktails.

Choose a theme (Great Gatsby, Medieval Court, Hollywood Glam) and assign guests roles to play. I have hosted hundreds of murder mysteries and they never fail to entertain.

3. Silent Disco

This one’s a hidden gem—especially if you’re dealing with noise restrictions.

Each guest gets headphones and can choose between multiple music channels. Picture Uncle Frank grooving to ABBA while your mates are deep in a trance track. Hilarious. Inclusive. And an epic way to keep the energy going.

4. Live Caricatures or Guest Art

Add an artist to your cocktail hour and let them sketch your guests in action. It’s a relaxed way to entertain and gives your loved ones a truly unique keepsake of their day.

Bonus: It gives camera-shy guests something to do between speeches and dancing.

5. Game Station or Mini Tournament

Great for venues with big, beautiful outdoor areas, games stations are a great way for your guests to play and socialise. Giant Jenga, ring toss, trivia, or mini obstacle courses.

Want to go next level? Host a mini “wedding Olympics” with silly challenges and tongue-in-cheek awards. It's a great for outdoor receptions, kid-friendly weddings, or just laid-back couples who love a laugh.

6. Tarot, Palm Reading or Astrology

For the more spiritually-minded couples, bring in a fortune teller to give light, fun readings during the evening. It adds a dash of mystery and a lot of entertainment—without taking over the whole night.

Make It Yours

Just like every ceremony is different, ever reception can be too. Whether you're after a relaxed and heartfelt vibe or something bold and theatrical, don't be afraid to think outside the box.

If you're planning your wedding and want help pulling together a celebration that stands out, I’d love to be part of it—as your celebrant, MC, or both.
